It was launched during European Maritime Day in Lisbon

The European Maritime Day (EMD), established in 2008, is the annual two-day event during which Europe’s maritime community meet to network, discuss and forge joint action. It targets maritime professionals, entrepreneurs and ocean leaders. The focus of EMD 2019 was on blue entrepreneurship, research, innovation and investment to boost sustainable technologies and emerging value chains in the wider ocean economy. Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella has opened the 2019 European Maritime Day conference in Lisbon. On this occasion, the EC launches the 2nd edition of its EU Blue Economy Report. In the Chapter 4 - “Emerging Sectors” of the Report there is an interesting section dedicated to Blue Energy, in particular to the offshore wind, tidal and wave energy sources/technologies: “the marine renewable energy sector comprises different technologies at a different stage of development. Bottom-fixed offshore wind represents the most advanced technology, with a cumulative capacity of 18.5 GW at the end of 2018. Other technologies such as floating offshore wind, tidal and wave energy technologies are all emerging in comparison to offshore wind”.
